Householders with
water tanks are at risk of contracting the crippling stomach
bug, Giardia, from unhygienic and untreated tank water, a local
pharmacist warns.
Giardia, which
swept across Sydney in 1998, hit millions of residents hard due
to contaminated water.
Rainwater tank
owners are the most at risk of contracting the parasite Giardia
due to stagnant and untreated tank water. Symptoms of
Giardia include diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps, dehydration,
fatigue and weight loss.
A large majority
of tank owners have no knowledge of the poor water quality
within their tanks. The hazardous matter found in tanks
includes, thick brown sludge at the bottom, to the discovery of
decaying animals, animal droppings, rats and cane toads.
According to
Logan Village Pharmacist, Mr Dean Sammut, Giardia is an
underlying issue amongst rainwater tank owners.
"It's a
common occurrence because residents continue to become ill
from contaminated tank water, " Mr Sammut said.
"On average,
two people per week are diagnosed and treated for Giardia
and top of that a further three would go untreated."
"People need
to be educated and informed on alternative methods to ensure
that they have access to safe drinking water."
